Studies show that 80% of the damage the sun does to skin happens after the age of 18. This shows that any age is a good age to start protecting your skin. If you have to be out in the sun, the best way to help block its effects on skin is to use a good sunscreen. Below are some tips on choosing the correct sunscreen.

To get the best coverage, use 3 layers of sun protection.
- A cream antioxidant like Topix Replenix Cream.
- Over the cream, a sunscreen such as Neutrogena Spectrum+
- And finally, a zinc oxide sunblock like Blue Lizard Sensitive Sunsceen

The best sunscreens have both UVA and UVB protection. Some ingredients to look for include:
- Avobenzone, Mexoryl, and Helioplex 360 which are UVA blockers
- Octosalate and Hemosalate which are UVB blockers
- Titanium Dioxide and zinc oxide which block both

Try to make sure that you reapply every hour that you will be exposed to the sun. Remember that you are most likely doing a little bit of activity and the sunscreen will rub off.

Make sure that you apply sunscreen to your face. Many people either forget or do not use enough. Apply it liberally. Try using a moisturizer/sunscreen combination every morning you know you will be in the sun. Korres Watermelon Sunscreen Face cream has a SPF of 30.

If you are going to be out in the sun often during the summer, it is a good idea to buy some UV protectant clothing. There are many companies that make clothing and hats. Try Columbia for some of the best UV blocking hats.

Your eyes need protection too. Whether it be your contacts, glasses or sunglasses, try to buy eyewear that has some sore of UV protection. UV coated sunglasses are available everywhere if you look for them.

If you have fair skin and burn easy avoid products that contain salicylic acid. Salicylic acid increases sensitivity to the sun and you will burn faster when exposed without protectant. Also, some blood pressure and antibiotics make your skin prone to sun damage. When on them try to cover up and get in the shade as much as possible. As funny as it sounds, drinking a lot of citrus can make your skin more sensitive.

If you have to be out in the sun, try to schedule outdoor activities in the early morning or late evening. The strength of the sunrays are directly related to the angle of the sun in the sky.

If after you have tried everything to remain protected and still end up with sunburn, try using a spray on aloe to sooth and moisturize. Some people even say that vinegar works for a bad burn!
